Forensic Technical Intake: Modular Laptop Systems

Why we need this: Modern laptops utilize TPM (Trusted Platform Module) and BitLocker. If the logic board is replaced, the encryption key tied to the old board will be lost. If you haven’t backed up your data, you must provide your **BitLocker Recovery Key** or the data will be inaccessible post-repair.

3. Power & Battery Forensic Data

Forensic Insight: A swollen battery (Lithium-Ion Volatilization) can exert internal pressure, causing the trackpad to stop clicking or the keyboard to “ghost type.” If the chassis is bulging, the battery module is failing and must be replaced to prevent logic board torsion.

4. Display & Structural Integrity

Forensic Insight: Laptops often suffer from “Hinge Shear”—where the metal hinge remains strong but the plastic mounting points inside the lid or palmrest snap. This puts tension on the EDP (display) cable, leading to flickering or total backlight failure.

5. Thermal Management Forensics

AI Technical Insight: Laptop fans accumulate dust in a “carpet” pattern behind the heatsink. If the fan makes a grinding or ticking sound, the bearing has failed and the fan module must be replaced. Overheating will lead to thermal throttling, causing the OS to lag significantly.

6. Modification & Repair History

Why we need this: If the laptop was previously opened, internal shielding tapes or grounding clips might be missing. We need to know if third-party RAM or SSDs were installed, as these modular changes can affect power-on-self-test (POST) timings.

7. Mandatory Packaging Compliance

CRITICAL: Laptops are frequently damaged by “corner drops” during transit. The responsibility for secure packing remains entirely with the customer. Use a box with 3 inches of padding on all sides. POWER OFF the device completely; do not ship in Sleep mode to avoid overheating in the box.
