RAM Compatibility Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

DDR generation, physical form factor, capacity, supported speed, memory slots, processor platform and motherboard limits all need to be considered before RAM is installed.

DDR3, DDR4 & DDR5 Memory

Desktop and laptop computers use different generations of DDR memory. DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable memory generations.

  • The computer’s supported DDR generation must be identified.
  • A DDR4 system cannot simply accept DDR5 memory because the newer memory is faster.
  • Physical keying and electrical characteristics differ between generations.
  • The motherboard or laptop platform determines which generation is supported.
Desktop RAM — DIMM

Most conventional desktop PCs use full-size DIMM memory modules. The exact type still needs to match the motherboard and processor platform.

Laptop RAM — SO-DIMM

Many upgradeable laptops use smaller SO-DIMM memory modules rather than full-size desktop DIMMs. Laptop memory compatibility is highly model dependent.

Memory Capacity

Adding more RAM increases the amount of data and application workload the system can keep readily available in memory. The correct capacity depends on the platform and intended use.

  • Requirements of the applications being used.
Memory Speed

RAM is specified with supported data rates, but the fastest module available is not automatically the best choice. The processor and motherboard determine which memory speeds and configurations are supported.

When different memory modules are combined, the system may operate at a common supported speed rather than each module operating at its advertised maximum.

Matching Existing RAM

Adding memory to an existing configuration requires more than matching the capacity printed on the module. The DDR generation, form factor and platform compatibility must also be correct.

Where possible, a suitably matched memory configuration can help provide predictable operation. Mixing different modules can introduce compatibility considerations, so we assess the complete configuration rather than recommending a module based on capacity alone.

Dual-Channel & Memory Configuration

Many desktop and laptop platforms can use multiple memory channels. Correctly populated compatible modules can allow the system to use the available memory architecture more effectively.

The exact channel configuration depends on the processor and motherboard or laptop platform. We check the manufacturer’s supported configuration before installing additional memory.

Soldered Memory

Some modern laptops and compact computers have RAM soldered directly to the motherboard. In these systems, conventional RAM replacement or expansion may not be possible.
